Types of Air Compressor Systems in Stock

As a leading service provider and compressor supplier for clients in the New England region, Energy Machinery offers a variety of compressor types.

Reciprocating Compressors

Industrial companies ranging from small to average size commonly use reciprocating compressors. Among the most popular of compressor varieties, reciprocating compressors feature a cylinder with a piston that repeats an up-and-down motion. As the piston draws downward, the motion pulls air into the cylinder. When the piston rises, the air within the cylinder compresses. However, these compressors are less efficient than some other varieties, and their operation can be noisy.

Variable-Speed Compressors

Variable-speed compressors are beneficial for their consistency, with the ability to provide steady air pressure by modifying the motor speed to equal your operation’s air supply demand. This approach is energy-efficient while still sufficiently delivering compressed air to match your facility’s variable needs. These units work well in manufacturing and industrial plant applications as well as round-the-clock operations with changeable air supply requirements. Their levels of demand may change throughout the course of the day, vary by season, or require alterations as in-house activities ebb and flow.

Oil-Free Compressors

Many compressors require oil as a lubricant for their moving parts, but oil-free compressors function using alternative lubricants that won’t negatively affect air quality. As a result, they quietly produce pure air that’s ideal for industries that work with consumable or otherwise sensitive goods, like the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and electronics markets. Oil-free compressors are also useful for paint and powder coat applications as they won’t introduce oil contamination in finishing processes.

Three types of oil-free compressors are:

  • Piston compressors. With simple maintenance needs, these compressors are oilless industrial units that are easy to install due to their compact size.
  • Scroll compressors. Also oilless, these single-stage units are ideal for industrial, medical, and laboratory environments. They work at a fixed speed.
  • Rotary screw compressors. These high-performance compressors are capable of handling continuous operations, as well as shift work. They’re available in one- and two-stage formats with options for variable-speed functionality.

Centrifugal Compressors

These compressors offer superior energy efficiency while supplying compressed air in high volumes. A versatile compressor type, centrifugal compressors have common applications in the following sectors:

  • Air separation
  • Blow molding
  • Chemical production and processing
  • General industry
  • Hydrocarbon processing
  • Oil and gas refining and petrochemicals
  • Textiles
