General Applications of Air Compressors

Industrial and commercial air compressors are essential in a wide range of applications, such as:

  • General manufacturing
  • Biotechnology
  • Hospitals
  • Packaging
  • Printing
  • Plastic molding
  • Pharmaceutical
  • Medical Device Manufacturing
  • Electronics
  • Auto repair
  • Laboratories
  • Woodworking
  • Metalworking

Here is a closer look at the various types of compressors and how they suit these applications.

Reciprocating Compressors

Reciprocating compressors are especially common in small- to medium-sized facilities that require high-pressure output. They get their name from the reciprocating piston that moves the air into the compression chamber. They are available in single-piston or dual-piston models.

Because the parts inside the compressor rub together to generate heat and friction during operation, reciprocating compressors are louder than other types of compressors. For this reason, they may be unsuitable in settings where it is vital that people can communicate clearly.

Rotary Screw, Scroll, and Vane Compressors

Rotary screw, scroll, and vane compressors can provide a high volume of compressed air all day long. Variable speed motors allow operators to control airflow on demand, which helps reduce energy consumption. These compressors are quiet and able to meet constant, heavy compressed air demands. They can also adapt to precision tasks like sandblasting and powder coating.

Variable Speed Compressors

Rotary compressors with a variable speed drive (VSD) are versatile and efficient because they can adapt to facilities with a fluctuating need for compressed air. Examples of these settings include 24/7 operations where demand changes from shift to shift and seasonal processes that require more air during certain months. VSD compressors save money over the long run by reducing energy consumption because they run exponentially in the unloaded condition.

These compressors are available in single-stage and two-stage models, with the two-stage versions being slightly more efficient because the air is compressed in two stages. The air is compressed to 30 psig in the first stage and cooled before being compressed to operating pressure. Compare the efficiencies of single-stage and two-stage VSD compressors:

  • 100 horsepower single-stage delivers 436 CFM at 125 psig
  • 100 horsepower two-stage delivers 513 CFM at 125 psig

Oil-Free Compressors

Oil-free compressors do not use oil, so they eliminate oil carryover in the compressed airflow. When combined with a variable speed drive, an oil-free compressor becomes one of the most environmentally friendly industrial air compressors available. They produce superior air quality for applications that depend on purity, such as food and beverage processing.

Accessories

To keep your commercial air compressors running efficiently, you can stock a variety of accessories and spare parts. At Energy Machinery, Inc., we carry a wide range of lubricants, replacement parts, filters, refrigerated air dryers, oil/water separators, evacuator drain valves, motors, VF drives, and other accessories to optimize your compressor’s performance.
Our air compressors and repair parts are genuine Gardner Denver products, which have been trusted for over 50 years to meet the world’s compressed air demands.

Refrigerated Air Dryers

Valued for their simple construction and low maintenance requirements, refrigerated air dryers remove moisture from the compressor’s atmospheric air intake. This air contains water vapor that can damage downstream equipment. Refrigerated air dryers eliminate this risk by lowering the temperature that condenses the water vapor and separating the water from the air.

There are two types of refrigerated air dryers: cycling and non-cycling. The non-cycling models run constantly regardless of how much air is compressed or how high the moisture content is, which makes them better suited for applications that require a steady supply of compressed air. Cycling models will turn on and off according to demand. These are typically more expensive than their non-cycling counterparts, but they help save money in the long run by reducing energy expenditure.

Desiccant & Tower Dryers

A desiccant dryer uses a desiccant material, like silica or activated charcoal, to create moisture-free compressed air. The desiccant attracts and absorbs water molecules to keep the air dry. We carry the following desiccant dryer products:

Blowers & Vacuum Pumps

We carry Gardner Denver positive displacement blowers with vacuum pumps. These units are the result of cutting-edge technology informed by real-life experience, producing enhanced efficiency and performance for nearly any application.

Used & Rebuilt Equipment

Pre-owned and rebuilt industrial air compressors and dryers are a great way to install a system at a lower price point. We carry used and rebuilt equipment that was traded in by our customers or part of our short-term rental offerings. With many makes, models, and sizes available, you’ll be able to find what you need while enjoying considerable cost savings.
