The air is compressed to 30 psig in the first stage and cooled before being compressed to operating pressure. Compare the efficiencies of single-stage and two-stage VSD compressors:

Refrigerated Air Dryers

Valued for their simple construction and low maintenance requirements, refrigerated air dryers remove moisture from the compressor’s atmospheric air intake. This air contains water vapor that can damage downstream equipment. Refrigerated air dryers eliminate this risk by lowering the temperature that condenses the water vapor and separating the water from the air.

There are two types of refrigerated air dryers: cycling and non-cycling. The non-cycling models run constantly regardless of how much air is compressed or how high the moisture content is, which makes them better suited for applications that require a steady supply of compressed air. Cycling models will turn on and off according to demand. These are typically more expensive than their non-cycling counterparts, but they help save money in the long run by reducing energy expenditure.
